I've come to the conclusion that Stephen King is a truly interesting character in American Letters, and I look forward to being an old man and seeing how history has judged him. On the one hand he's often very bad, his prose can be very clunky, and a lot of his ideas about fiction are sort of annoying. On the other hand, his books can be pretty good, he tells a ripping yarn, and he genuinely cares about the state of the art. His intro to Houellebecq's essay "Against the World, Against Life" is interesting, and his story in McSweeney's thrilling tales was one of the better ones.

It has been announced that the guest editor of next years Best American Short Stories will be Stephen King.

Is this good or bad?
